High-Resolution Water Sampling via a Solar-Powered Autonomous Surface Vehicle

Accurate water quality assessment requires spatially resolved sampling, yet most unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) can collect only a limited number of samples or rely on single-point sensors with poor representativeness. This work presents a solar-powered, fully autonomous USV featuring a novel syringe-based sampling architecture capable of acquiring 72 discrete, contamination-minimized water samples per mission. The vehicle incorporates a ROS 2 autonomy stack with GPS-RTK navigation, LiDAR and stereo-vision obstacle detection, Nav2-based mission planning, and long-range LoRa supervision, enabling dependable execution of sampling routes in unstructured environments. The platform integrates a behavior-tree autonomy architecture adapted from Nav2, enabling mission-level reasoning and perception-aware navigation. A modular 6x12 sampling system, controlled by distributed micro-ROS nodes, provides deterministic actuation, fault isolation, and rapid module replacement, achieving spatial coverage beyond previously reported USV-based samplers. Field trials in Achocalla Lagoon (La Paz, Bolivia) demonstrated 87% waypoint accuracy, stable autonomous navigation, and accurate physicochemical measurements (temperature, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids) comparable to manually collected references. These results demonstrate that the platform enables reliable high-resolution sampling and autonomous mission execution, providing a scalable solution for aquatic monitoring in remote environments.


System Identification and Adaptive Input Estimation on the Jaiabot Micro Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

This paper reports an attempt to model the system dynamics and estimate both the unknown internal control input and the state of a recently developed marine autonomous vehicle, the Jaiabot. Although the Jaiabot has shown promise in many applications, process and sensor noise necessitates state estimation and noise filtering. In this work, we present the first surge and heading linear dynamical model for Jaiabots derived from real data collected during field testing. An adaptive input estimation algorithm is implemented to accurately estimate the control input and hence the state. For validation, this approach is compared to the classical Kalman filter, highlighting its advantages in handling unknown control inputs.


Depth-Constrained ASV Navigation with Deep RL and Limited Sensing

Abstract-- Autonomous Surface V ehicles (ASVs) play a crucial role in maritime operations, yet their navigation in shallow-water environments remains challenging due to dynamic disturbances and depth constraints. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL) framework for ASV navigation under depth constraints, where the vehicle must reach a target while avoiding unsafe areas with only a single depth measurement per timestep from a downward-facing Single Beam Echosounder (SBES). T o enhance environmental awareness, we integrate Gaussian Process (GP) regression into the RL framework, enabling the agent to progressively estimate a bathymetric depth map from sparse sonar readings. This approach improves decision-making by providing a richer representation of the environment. Furthermore, we demonstrate effective sim-to-real transfer, ensuring that trained policies generalize well to real-world aquatic conditions. Experimental results validate our method's capability to improve ASV navigation performance while maintaining safety in challenging shallow-water environments. I. SMART-OC: A Real-time Time-risk Optimal Replanning Algorithm for Dynamic Obstacles and Spatio-temporally Varying Currents

Typical marine environments are highly complex with spatio-temporally varying currents and dynamic obstacles, presenting significant challenges to Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) for safe and efficient navigation. Thus, the USVs need to continuously adapt their paths with real-time information to avoid collisions and follow the path of least resistance to the goal via exploiting ocean currents. In this regard, we introduce a novel algorithm, called Self-Morphing Adaptive Replanning Tree for dynamic Obstacles and Currents (SMART-OC), that facilitates real-time time-risk optimal replanning in dynamic environments. SMART-OC integrates the obstacle risks along a path with the time cost to reach the goal to find the time-risk optimal path. The effectiveness of SMART-OC is validated by simulation experiments, which demonstrate that the USV performs fast replannings to avoid dynamic obstacles and exploit ocean currents to successfully reach the goal.


Design and Experimental Validation of an Autonomous USV for Sensor Fusion-Based Navigation in GNSS-Denied Environments

This paper presents the design, development, and experimental validation of MARVEL, an autonomous unmanned surface vehicle built for real-world testing of sensor fusion-based navigation algorithms in GNSS-denied environments. MARVEL was developed under strict constraints of cost-efficiency, portability, and seaworthiness, with the goal of creating a modular, accessible platform for high-frequency data acquisition and experimental learning. It integrates electromagnetic logs, Doppler velocity logs, inertial sensors, and real-time kinematic GNSS positioning. MARVEL enables real-time, in-situ validation of advanced navigation and AI-driven algorithms using redundant, synchronized sensors. Field experiments demonstrate the system's stability, maneuverability, and adaptability in challenging sea conditions. The platform offers a novel, scalable approach for researchers seeking affordable, open-ended tools to evaluate sensor fusion techniques under real-world maritime constraints.


Coordinated control of multiple autonomous surface vehicles: challenges and advances - a systematic review

The increasing use and implementation of Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) for various activities in maritime environments is expected to drive a rise in developments and research on their control. Particularly, the coordination of multiple ASVs presents novel challenges and opportunities, requiring interdisciplinary research efforts at the intersection of robotics, control theory, communication systems, and marine sciences. The wide variety of missions or objectives for which these vessels can be collectively used allows for the application and combination of different control techniques. This includes the exploration of machine learning to consider aspects previously deemed infeasible. This review provides a comprehensive exploration of coordinated ASV control while addressing critical gaps left by previous reviews. Unlike previous works, we adopt a systematic approach to ensure integrity and minimize bias in article selection. We delve into the complex world of sub-actuated ASVs with a focus on customized control strategies and the integration of machine learning techniques for increased autonomy. By synthesizing recent advances and identifying emerging trends, we offer insights that drive this field forward, providing both a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art techniques and guidance for future research efforts.


Approximate Supervised Object Distance Estimation on Unmanned Surface Vehicles

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and boats are increasingly important in maritime operations, yet their deployment is limited due to costly sensors and complexity. LiDAR, radar, and depth cameras are either costly, yield sparse point clouds or are noisy, and require extensive calibration. Here, we introduce a novel approach for approximate distance estimation in USVs using supervised object detection. We collected a dataset comprising images with manually annotated bounding boxes and corresponding distance measurements. Leveraging this data, we propose a specialized branch of an object detection model, not only to detect objects but also to predict their distances from the USV. This method offers a cost-efficient and intuitive alternative to conventional distance measurement techniques, aligning more closely with human estimation capabilities. We demonstrate its application in a marine assistance system that alerts operators to nearby objects such as boats, buoys, or other waterborne hazards.


Hybrid Physics-ML Modeling for Marine Vehicle Maneuvering Motions in the Presence of Environmental Disturbances

A hybrid physics-machine learning modeling framework is proposed for the surface vehicles' maneuvering motions to address the modeling capability and stability in the presence of environmental disturbances. From a deep learning perspective, the framework is based on a variant version of residual networks with additional feature extraction. Initially, an imperfect physical model is derived and identified to capture the fundamental hydrodynamic characteristics of marine vehicles. This model is then integrated with a feedforward network through a residual block. Additionally, feature extraction from trigonometric transformations is employed in the machine learning component to account for the periodic influence of currents and waves. The proposed method is evaluated using real navigational data from the 'JH7500' unmanned surface vehicle. The results demonstrate the robust generalizability and accurate long-term prediction capabilities of the nonlinear dynamic model in specific environmental conditions. This approach has the potential to be extended and applied to develop a comprehensive high-fidelity simulator.


Robust Perception and Navigation of Autonomous Surface Vehicles in Challenging Environments

Research on coastal regions traditionally involves methods like manual sampling, monitoring buoys, and remote sensing, but these methods face challenges in spatially and temporally diverse regions of interest. Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) with artificial intelligence (AI) are being explored, and recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as vital for future ecosystem understanding. However, there is not yet a mature technology for autonomous environmental monitoring due to typically complex coastal situations: (1) many static (e.g., buoy, dock) and dynamic (e.g., boats) obstacles not compliant with the rules of the road (COLREGs); (2) uncharted or uncertain information (e.g., non-updated nautical chart); and (3) high-cost ASVs not accessible to the community and citizen science while resulting in technology illiteracy. To address the above challenges, my research involves both system and algorithmic development: (1) a robotic boat system for stable and reliable in-water monitoring, (2) maritime perception to detect and track obstacles (such as buoys, and boats), and (3) navigational decision-making with multiple-obstacle avoidance and multi-objective optimization.

Abstract-- This paper introduces the first publicly accessible multi-modal perception dataset for autonomous maritime navigation, focusing on in-water obstacles within the aquatic environment to enhance situational awareness for Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs). This dataset, consisting of diverse objects encountered under varying environmental conditions, aims to bridge the research gap in marine robotics by providing a multi-modal, annotated, and ego-centric perception dataset, for object detection and classification. We also show the applicability of the proposed dataset's framework using deep learning-based open-source perception algorithms that have shown success. We expect that our dataset will contribute to development of the marine autonomy pipeline and marine (field) robotics. I.
